I work on the understanding that all therapies offer the same goal - choice. Choice about how to respond to situations, rather than continuing old behavioural patterns based on unconscious decisions made years ago. We may not feel happier after therapy and may have to leave behind a lot of old, safe assumptions about ourselves, people and the world, but we will feel more in control of our responses to situations and therefore, hopefully, more contented.
The way this works is through (relatively) short term therapy of about 20 sessions on specific goals. Working as an integrative psychotherapist means that I integrate a number of therapies learnt over the years. The language I use will be based on the belief that we operate from 'parts' of ourselves rather than being one-dimensional human beings, for example our career 'part' which may be very different from our Saturday evening 'part'. Occasionally one or two 'parts' seem to be opposing the direction in which we would like to move or be getting in the way of positive relationships. They may be critical of us when we are trying our best. This therapy works with these parts, borrowing from therapies such as Transactional Analysis, Internal Family Systems, Ego State Therapy, EMDR and Attachment-Focused EMDR and CBT. I am also a firm believer in Mindfulness and the benefits this can bring, having experienced this for myself.
