My principal interest as a therapist is in working with people who are upset about issues relating to food, weight, shape and size. I have worked with eating disorders and disordered eating for many years and am particularly interested in a psychological approach to overeating and obesity. I have experience of working with people who are considering bariatric surgery or have already had surgery. I use attachment theory to try and understand why so many people use food and the manipulation of food as a way of soothing and anaesthetising themselves for emotional distress. My aim is to help clients learn other ways of managing their lives without such a dependence on an obsessional focus on food. For this reason I do not work directly with issues relating to diet, nutrition, exercise etc, since I believe that most clients know very well what it is that they should be eating/doing. My aim is to enable clients to choose well for themselves because they are no longer making food the centre of their lives. Finding new ways of self-soothing and relating to others is not easy and takes practice, but will enable clients to let go of old obsessions and find greater contentment and satisfaction with life.
