My Approach

It is important to me that you should experience me as being as helpful, sensitive and empathic as is necessary for you. We should make sense of what is happening for you from your perspective. I am not the expert of you, you are. It is not difficult for us/you to lose sight of what you value and appreciate about your self when difficulties occur. What I can and do offer is a curiosity through gentle exploration and as our relationship develops so this curiosity will develop. This curiosity may allow you and I to wonder about what has been important in how you have become the person that you are and to wonder about the person, that version of your self that you would prefer to be. My belief is that we are made up of multiple presentations and versions of self; self in relation to e.g. friends, work, family and partners.
I will offer an initial appointment so that you can meet me and ask any questions that you may have about what my approach looks like.

About Me

I am a fully qualified family therapist and social worker employed by the NHS with over 40 years experience of working children young people and families. I have a small private practice and am employed by the NHS in a Child & Adolescent Mental Health Team.
I am registered both with UK Council for Psychotherapy and Social Work England.
I enjoy working with families paying particular to the relationships that we establish in families and what influences those relationships. I consider my self to be a curious and empathic therapist who recognizes the family as the expert of themselves and my role in working collaboratively in facilitating conversations that are of most help to the family.
I am safeguarding supervisor, a clinical supervisor and I as part of my duty to my clients and self access regular independent supervision.
I maintain confidential practice whilst ensuring the safety of my client.
I am part of a family and family is an important part of who I am both as a person and practitioner.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anxiety can dominate who you are as a person. I want to be alongside as we make sense of why anxiety sometimes or often, stops you from living the version of your life that you would prefer. We do that by finding out about your relationship with anxiety and how you can start to have a relationship where you have some control once more over anxiety and it's debilitating symptoms.
I can help in sensitively exploring with you how domestic violence has become or been a part of your life, how it has undermined your sense of who you were prior to the abuse and how you can move on in developing a preferred sense of self. I work with you walking alongside as we make sense of what has happened and giving you a sense of identity once more. A sense of identity which acknowledges your past. You may talk about it being scary to let go of something that has defined who you and others think you are. I will respect this and move at a pace determined by you with my being alongside.
What does family mean to you? I want to understand from your family's perspective what is important to you both in relation to each other and as individuals. My strong belief is that when we value both self as an individual and in relation to others we can start to explore what we appreciate and value and address those difficulties that may sometimes get in the way of your being the family that you want to be.
I am interested in our exploring your relationships with others, what determines what they look like and how you might prefer them to be. We can change how we are in relation to others. if you start to explore how you are in relation to others you start to have a sense of who you are, how others may experience you and to think about what you have the capacity to change and importantly what you want to change.
