My Approach

I am an Integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor and Family Constellations Facilitator. I have a particular interest in ancestral trauma and how that is passed on down the generations. This means that you could be carrying trauma that was experienced by grandparents or great-grandparents. I am also integrating Energy Psychotherapy methods into my practice, these link up the mind and body to release traumas and difficult experiences.

About Me

To flourish in the present and the future it is necessary to process and make peace with the past - both our personal past and ancestral past.

My approach combines integrative psychotherapy and family constellations which facilitates this process. So much of who we are was created in our 'formative years', creating our beliefs about:

Ourselves e.g. I’m not good enough
Others e.g. They don’t like me,
The world e.g. I don’t belong.
When your beliefs are uncovered and understood you can then choose to keep them or change them, using mind, body and emotions to make lasting change

Mind, Body & Emotions
We are made up of all three and all three need to be included in order to make long lasting changes. For example I like to use the body to find out more of what needs attending to.

Have you been in a situation where you felt unsafe when there was no logical reason to?
Have you tried to change your behaviour or thoughts through being rational and found it hasn’t worked?
Do you find yourself reacting disproportionately to situations and people?
Do you feel you should be happy because your life looks good on paper?

These are ways that show your mind, body and emotions have become out of balance and they need help, by getting rid of old ways of being that no longer serve you and by updating your emotional and behavioural responses to present day situations.

Our bodies often are trying to communicate with us to let us know that something is wrong, by paying attention to what it's saying we can gain a much greater understanding of what issues need addressing. If you listened to your body what would it be trying to tell you?

Family Constellations
We are gaining more and more understanding on how trauma is passed down through DNA in our epigenetics. Family Constellations can reveal these and help you make peace or change what you have inherited. Family Constellations can be a great way of looking at issues that have persisted in your life despite other types of therapy or feelings that you have that don’t make sense in your own lived experience. For example a person always makes sure they have food with them wherever they go and no matter how long they are away from the house for 10 minutes or 3 hours and no matter how many food outlets are available. This is often the experience of children or grandchildren born from the holocaust survivors, as then the reality was they didn’t know when they would next eat. Or the person that feels that they might harm their baby despite never having harmed anyone, when the family history was explored their grandmother accidentally burned the house down from a candle and her baby died. The granddaughter is feeling the fear her grandmother felt but never processed and recovered from. Family constellation issues may show up in relationships, health problems or money issues to name but a few.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anxiety is a huge issue with many people, often our anxiety feels disproportionate to what is happening in our real lives. Together we can find out the root cause of the anxiety and which approach would be most helpful.
There can be many reasons for depression, you can also feel depressed without really understanding why. I can help you find out the reasons why you are feel depressed and together we can workout what approach would be most helpful.
To have good mental health you also need good emotional health. Often our emotions and our rational thinking are at odds with one another because you are living and operating from at time that is no longer relevant in your life. For example, you might once have have lived in an unsafe environment, but now you are living in a safe place with safe people but your body keeps reacting as if you are unsafe. This is because your body hasn't realised that the situation has changed. By working to connect the mind, emotions and thoughts we can help you release and clear the old information that is no longer useful.
Relationships are at the center of who we are and how we relate. The relationships you had with parents or primary caregiver will inform how to relate to yourself and how you form relationships with others. It can be easy to think that your childhood or relationships with parents/primary caregivers was 'fine' but your experiences in the first 7 years of your life are when your beliefs about yourself, others and the world were formed. It can be incredibly helpful to revisit these to see if your beliefs are still useful and helpful for you. Regardless of your childhood experiences the aim isn't to blame anyone but to understand their influence and to see what you want to keep and what needs updating.
Trauma affects many people, it can also be hard to label some experiences as traumatic as it can feel like a big label. Other times it is clear and obvious as the result is PTSD. I have found the best way to treat trauma is to connect the mind and body so that the trauma can be released.
