How we support our full clinical members

As well as providing practical membership benefits, we work tirelessly to promote understanding of psychotherapy and to increase it as a force for good. We have listened to how important this work is to our members and are investing heavily to increase our campaigning and lobbying work on issues from cuts in services to the way NICE assesses psychological therapies. Our opinions are increasingly sought by the media, politicians, NHS bodies and others.

We include you in our national register, increasing your employability and credibility

Membership of UKCP is the mark of quality for high standards of training, professional and ethical practice from the leading national professional body for psychotherapy.

UKCP membership is a recognised quality standard.  Our register is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority. Being a UKCP registrant demonstrates the calibre of your training and practice to potential clients and employers and among colleagues within the profession.

We campaign to influence national policy on key issues

We continue to fight for access to effective, transformative and long-lasting psychotherapies for all. We work collaboratively to increase our influence and will continue to develop our existing partnerships and make new ones. And our magazine, the New Psychotherapist is sent to MPs, MSPs, Welsh Assembly Members and other influential stakeholders.

Just three examples of our influencing work are:

  • Working with a coalition of professional organisations to secure an unprecedented third revision to the NICE Guideline for Depression in Adults
  • Supporting, alongside partner organisations, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Prescribed Drug Dependence to produce guidance for therapist supporting clients taking psychiatric drugs
  • Being called to give evidence to the Women and Equalities Committee, a parliamentary select committee, on the mental health of men and boys.

We raise the profile of the profession in the media and work to improve public understanding of psychotherapy

We promote the benefits of psychotherapy to the public through our partnership with Psychologies magazine, our podcasts and social media channels. Our media work has included appearances in outlets as varied as Channel 5 news, the Guardian, New York Times and The House magazine, as well as big circulation consumer press.

And we have forged a unique and exciting academic partnership with Imperial College which includes a public-facing nine-week programme on the history, impact and benefits of psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic counselling which we will deliver from October 2019.

We offer access to discounts on professional indemnity insurance

To support our members’ professional practice and help them to manage costs, we have negotiated special rates on professional indemnity insurance with two leading insurance companies.

This is a member service to support our members’ professional practice and help them manage the costs of your practice. We don’t receive commission from the insurance companies.

We provide email bulletins and access to the New Psychotherapist magazine

We send regular email updates to keep you informed with news affecting the profession.

Our magazine, the New Psychotherapist, is published three times a year. Each edition of the New Psychotherapist looks at a particular theme within psychotherapy or a topic with a psychotherapeutic angle. It offers members opportunities to share best practice, share developments likely to impact on their practice and encourage spirited debates between members or discuss views on professional practice and topical issues.
