My Approach

About me
Exploring your motivation to see a counsellor at this exact time will be the starting point of our work together. When you contact me you may feel disoriented, preoccupied or in great distress and you may wish to make sense of what is going on for you.

High levels of anxiety or stress may make it difficult for you to identify the exact source of your distress or stop you from making sense of what is unfolding around you. Counselling may offer you the space to sit back from the intensity of your experiences and make the choices that are available to you more apparent.

My role as a psychotherapist is to provide a safe space in which you can sit in the 'clearing' of your life and understand the whirlwind of your emotions, and get a clearer understanding of the choices that lie ahead.

Once we meet we will discuss the possible direction of our work together on the basis of the particular conflict, strong emotion, or dilemma that has brought you to our session. Depending on your experience of sitting alongside me for the duration of our time together, and how effective my presence has been whilst listening to you, you can decide if you feel that the way I work, and the way I am alongside you is the way you would like to proceed.

I am a UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy) registered Existential Psychotherapist and a member of the Society for Existential Analysis (SEA).

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Bereavement leads to so many layers of loss worthy of exploration. Would such painful enquiry need a safe and containing space to be faced?
A cancer prognosis , either our own or for those we care for , can bring to the forefront of our existence a painful and fearful dimension of existence that can result in extreme feelings of dislocation. Can this be explored within a firm and holding therapeutic space?
Issues arising from dislocation, loss of mooring, identity crisis and 'lostness' are at the heart of a sense of 'solidity' and 'mattering-ness'. Can we find a sense of belonging to self whilst regaining ground in the world outside?
At a time when identity is so vital and so fractured a containing and safe space to explore is more necessary than ever.
At the core of any sense of belonging or not belonging lies a ruptured or healing relationship. A safe relationship with a therapist can be the container needed to explore such deep life defining issues.
