Supporting the effectiveness of psychotherapy

This section gives a brief overview of some research systems and measures supporting the effectiveness of psychotherapy

  • CORE

The CORE (Clinical Outcomes for Routine Evaluation) System was designed in the UK for use in the full range of individual adult psychotherapies to measure outcome.

  • SCORE
SCORE is a self-report outcome measure modelled on CORE and designed to be sensitive to the kinds of changes in family functioning that systemic family and couples therapists see as indications of useful therapeutic change.
  • Client feedback and experiences
In addition to measures such as CORE and SCORE, there are a range of client-completed outcome and process measures as well as other research tools that psychotherapists can use in their work.
  • Mixed methods
In mixed methods studies researchers choose to combine different types of research methods.
