HUMANISTIC & INTEGRATIVE PSYCHOTHERAPY SECTIONSpectrum SPEC 7 Endymion Road, London N4 1EE Organisational History Spectrum was founded in 1976 as a clinical practice and training centre. Its orientation is humanistic and integrative. The training programme has grown organically over the years. The development of the programme is based on detailed monitoring and discussion of what makes people more effective at working with people. We understand that each individual needs to develop professionally in a different time frame and has specific training needs. To support this we have developed a flexible modular training structure and each trainee participates in developing their own programme to reflect their experience and pace. One of the strengths of spectrum training is that it is built upon clinical practice. All of our trainers continue to have full individual and group practices and have been practising at spectrum for over fifteen years. This means they are always aware of the relationship between training and the reality of practice. Training Course Selection & Admission Selection to the training programme is by written application and interview by two members of the training committee. It is a requirement of applicants that they have done a year-long Spectrum course before applying, either the one year course in psychotherapy or the counselling skills course. Trainees may apply for training and start their modular course programme at any point during the year. Training Course Requirements Personal therapy yes - of the style and frequency with which they intend to practise, and in line with current HIPS practice. Clinical/clients During training, trainees are required to do a voluntary placement or work with private clients in order to graduate. This may be with a single client. Supervision trainees are required to be in fortnightly group supervision at spectrum for six months before setting up in private practice and in fortnightly group supervision while in training. Written work write up professional/personal learning about each course; prepare a detailed CV and autobiography to graduate; and put together a portfolio of their work and an extensive professional study of work with a client in order to be accredited. Attendance 100% attendance is required except in the case of illness. As the course is modular, trainees can proceed through it at their own pace, a minimum of four years. Training Course Assessments, standards, role of training committee Assessment is on each year long course by tutors, self and peers. Each trainee has a personal training adviser for the duration of their training, and has an annual assessment of their work with a member of the training committee. They are assessed by the training committee and external examiner at graduation and accreditation. Standards are as per current HIPS requirements. The role of the training committee is to meet regularly to receive applications for training, to match trainees with training advisers, to asses trainees and deal with concerns about them, to evaluate the training programme and its development, to respond to UKCP and HIPS requirements, to respond to trainees' feedback, to liaise with the external examiner and moderator, to plan graduation and accreditation, to receive feedback about graduation and accreditation, to assess the curriculum and its developments, to provide meetings for trainees with the training committee and external moderator.
Theoretical orientation Spectrum's theoretical orientation is humanistic and it is committed to lifelong learning and a style of learning which is independent, thoughtful and rigorous. There is a balance between academic learning, experiential and skills-based learning, personal awareness and supervised practice. The emphasis is on the practical application of theoretical knowledge and skills, and integration of personal awareness. The training is theoretically informed and practice based. Various humanistic theoretical models are taught, the two dominant being gestalt and formative psychology. The course is modular, trainees are required to take a number of compulsory courses, listed below. There are five curriculum sections in the training: Introduction to humanistic psychotherapy, theory and practice
