In a world of automated messages and supermarket self-service check-outs, the likelihood of a machine replacing the human being is high. It is also being experienced in psychological therapy. The qualities of 'talk therapies' are slowly being replaced by software packages and internet self-help programs. This is an alarming change, especially for those concerned about losing their job. However one must think in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. Is a computer program really effective and could it really replace the psychologist?
