UKCP REGISTRANTS' BENEFITS

Immediate Benefits for Registrants:

  • Recognition from an established professional organisation - the UKCP is the largest umbrella body for psychotherapy in the UK with more than 80 Member Organisations and over 6,500 Registrants.
  • Inclusion in the National Register of Psychotherapists, searchable on the Internet via the UKCP web site.
  • An annual certificate of registration, with a Registration Number.
  • A bi-annual (soon to be tri-annual) newsletter magazine, The Psychotherapist.
  • Advance notice of UKCP events, and priority booking for the UKCP Professional Conferences.
  • Permission to use UKCP logo in advertising (details on UKCP website)

Yellow Pages and Thomson Directories

To help people seeking a professionally qualified psychotherapist to find a UKCP registered practitioner more easily, and to help raise the public profile of UKCP, the Vice Chair has negotiated a Corporate Advertising Scheme with the Yellow Pages and Thomson Directories.

The UKCP Yellow Pages and Thomson Directories teams will contact all Registrants and Member Organisations, initially by post, and subsequently by telephone, to offer them an advertisement in a UKCP branded box, under the category of "Psychotherapy and Analysis" in their regional edition. If you wish to contact them directly about joining this advertising scheme, the telephone number is 01753 553311 (for Yellow Pages), and 01252 390901 (for Thomson Directories). All advertisements are checked by the UKCP Office to ensure that, at the time of going to press, all advertisers in the UKCP box are currently UKCP Registrants or Members.

This is an optional scheme for all Registrants and Member Organisations (NB: This scheme has been temporarily withdrawn pending new negotiations with Yellow Pages)

Subscription Reduction: International Journal of Psychotherapy (IJP)

UKCP Registrants can receive a saving of €30 (£20+) if they take out a 2-year introductory subscription to the IJP.

The IJP - is the official journal of the European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP), now into its 11th volume; originally was published [first 8 volumes] by Taylor and Francis; is in English, with some articles also in their mother-tongue; is a peer-reviewed journal; has 3 issues per annum with about 100 pages each issue; is "a major cross-orientational vehicle contributing to the wider debate about the future of psychotherapy and reflecting the internal dialogue within European psychotherapy and its wider relations with the rest of the world."

The introductory subscription offer costs €90 [Euros] for UKCP Registrants (or €60 if you also hold the ECP) for the first 2 years and thereafter renewal is at the normal Western European price of €60 per year (or €45 for ECP holders). A special subscription form (MS Word) can be downloaded from the EAP web site, and sent by e-mail to the editor, Tom Ormay, with a Mastercard, Visa or Eurocard payment. Further details about the IJP can be found on the EAP web site: www.europsyche.org

This is an optional scheme for all (and only) UKCP Registrants. UKCP Registrants are also invited to contribute to the IJP with long articles (< 5,000 words), short articles (1,000-2,000 words), book reviews, and correspondence.

Involvement in Central Services Committee & Working Groups

UKCP is committed to developing its benefits to UKCP Registrants and to giving much more attention to the individual needs of psychotherapists (& psychotherapeutic counsellors) for support and services to help them in their practice development. To this end, a revised Services Development Committee (SDC) is being set up, chaired by the new Vice-Chair for Registrants, with various Working Groups of psychotherapists and lay specialists with specific interests, who do not want to commit to long-term committee membership, but are prepared to offer their assistance to a small, fixed number of meetings and timescale.

Initial areas of remit of the SDC and Working Groups include:

  • Currently, little if any support is offered to registrants on how to develop their professional practice from a business point of view. This is an area that could be developed to offer support, particularly to newly or recently qualified registrants and as a further incentive for Candidates in Training to register with UKCP.
  • Recent changes in the regulations regarding CRB checks are also causing concern for registrants who require these, and the least UKCP should be able to do is direct them to assistance, at best we may be able to actively help.
  • Guidance on alternative methods of ensuring Continuing Professional Development requirements are met (which might include active participation in Committees and Working Groups like this one).
  • Networking opportunities with other psychotherapists and professionals likely to make referrals or recommendations.
  • Information on employment opportunities and the routes into these, with possibly a Job / Employment area on the UKCP web site.
  • Partnership work with the Department of Health, the HPC, the NHS, AMICUS, and other 'bodies' to ensure the psychotherapy profession is viewed as separate to psychology and possibly leading to the appointment of a 'project officer' one-day-a-week for six months to further develop joint working.
  • Development of The Psychotherapist into 4 issues p.a. and possibly moving towards a more professional, peer-reviewed journal and/or a more frequent e-newsletter
  • A 'Registrant Only' section of the UKCP web site with (possibly):

-Ability to change personal details
-Access to professional journal archive
-Virtual libraries: eg. Ethics, Research
-Job opportunities
-Various discussion groups
-Dissertation archive
-Up-to-date standards info
-Section/College pages

If any of these areas interest you, Registrant representation on the SDC and in the Working Groups is really needed, initially through volunteers (endorsed by the various Member Organisations and/or Sections), subsequently possibly through election. Trainee / candidate representation is also sought. Meeting expenses are paid. Please contact UKCP Head Office. Involvement for Registrants (and Trainees) in the SDC is voluntary.

Involvement in Member Organisations & Section/Colleges

Please do not neglect becoming involved (as a possible UKCP representative) in your Member Organisation (MO) and Section / College. Often these do not have enough representatives to fill all the places available in the various levels of committees. These ensure that UKCP can speak with a wide and broad 'voice'. Whilst involvement in these areas is voluntary, expenses are paid, and you will almost certainly enrich your professional practice of psychotherapy

Professional Indemnity Insurance

Your own Professional Indemnity or Liability Insurance is required when working as a psychotherapist professionally in private practice. (You may be covered already if employed working in a clinic or for the NHS.) UKCP has 'encouraged' a couple of insurance companies to offer special discounts for UKCP Registrants.

Howden Professional Indemnity Insurance

The cost of defending a professional liability claim can be very high, in terms of time and legal costs alone. And of course the cost of damages could be crippling. Professional Indemnity & Malpractice insurance is offered for Psychologists, for Counsellors, for Psychotherapists, for Coaching Professionals, for Human Resource Practitioners, and for Counselling-based Charities. UKCP Registrants are offered a special discount price on their annual professional insurance. Check out their web site: www.howdenins.com or call 0113 251 5011

Towergate Professional Risks - Professional Liability Insurance

Even as a sole trader, or small counselling firm when arranging your insurance you want to be dealing with a name you can trust. That's why our professional liability insurance is arranged with AXA, an established, global insurer. The policy covers a wide range of civil liabilities, and preferential rates are available to UKCP members. For a quotation, visit their website www.towergateprofessionalrisks.co.uk or call their UKCP dedicated number: 0113 391 9560

UKCP - Karnac

The agreement between UKCP and Karnac has produced a wealth of submissions from Registrants (about 70 within 18 months). 46 of these proposals have been accepted and are moving forwards to publication. The UKCP-Karnac Editorial Board is expanding and we are also looking for more assessors to vet these submissions. A list of forthcoming publications with authors and 'working titles' will be published in the next issue of 'The Psychotherapist'.

DVDs from www.psychotherapy.net : 25% Introductory Discount

We have arranged a discount of 25% on any initial order of teaching or educational DVDs from www.psychotherapy.net/video-titles Please go to their website and check-out their list of about 30 DVDs on a variety of topics in psychotherapy from people like: James Bugental, Irvin Yalom, Arnold Lazarus, Insoo Kim Berg, Jacob Moreno, the Ackerman Institute, etc.
