Organisational History

PCP Education and Training originated as the Education Section of the Centre for Personal Construct Psychology. It became independent of the Centre in the early 1990's. It was incorporated in 1997 as a not-for-profit organisation concerned with teaching personal construct psychotherapy, registering PC psychotherapists and providing for ongoing professional development. PCP E&T's aims are to promote and accredit personal construct psychotherapy training of the highest standard and to ensure that those on the PCP E&T register maintain their professional standards in accordance with the organisation's Code of Ethics and Practice. Courses are offered at three levels: Foundation, Practioner's and Advanced/Diploma. Continuing Professional Development is provided in the form of Supervision, one-day workshops and Residential Weekends etc.

Training Course Selection & Admission

The entry to training is graduate level or its equivalent, together with relevant experience of working with people. Degrees in psychology, nursing and speech and language therapy are some of those acceptable as entry points. The applicant's suitability for undertaking studies at a postgraduate level is seen as essential. Experience as a client, preferably in personal construct psychotherapy but otherwise in any modality recognised by UKCP is considered useful.

Training Course Requirements

Training Course Assessments, standards, role of training committee

Students are assessed each year by their tutor, supervisor and, with due regard to confidentiality, their training therapist. Their written work is studied by two readers. If there is disagreement the Internal moderator reads it. The Courses Board (our training Committee) is responsible for all this and for the award of the Diploma when all the required work is satisfactorily completed.

Theoretical orientation

understanding, alternative, more personally productive ways may be found of dealing with the world as currently experienced. We are often only partially aware of the meanings in term of which we conduct our relationships and participate in life's events. The exploration of such underlying meanings and their patterns is central to the personal construct approach. Personal construct psychotherapy may be relatively brief, perhaps ten sessions, or it may continue for a year or more. The therapy is appropriate for individuals, couples or groups, adults and children.
