The outcome of the PLG

Dear member

On Thursday 10 December, the HPC 'Council' will meet to discuss the outcome of the PLG. The two main documents that will discussed are below.

In June David Pink and myself met with representatives of the BACP. At that time my recommendation was that we needed to get the HPC to move the arguments from the PLG to the Department of Health, (DH) so there could be a discussion at the political level. In essence this seems to be what the HPC have done. Some of the questions regarding regulation and its forms are still open for negotiation with the DH.

It is an opportunity for the incoming Board of Trustees to see that UKCP urgently request that the Psychological Professions Alliance Group (PPAG) - BACP, BABCP, BPS, BPC and UKCP - convene a meeting to get the professions to revisit the Psychological Professions Council's (PPC) proposal put forward in 2005. It would be opportune to negotiate with the DH for the HPC have a separate section to hold the 'talking therapies' under rules more appropriate for the profession. We can take credit for this PLG consultation being much different to the one with the psychologists.

These documents show that we must be aware that there are dangers including the possible loss of psychotherapy being subsumed into psychology or counselling if we don't hold our established position.

Although I will no longer be chair of UKCP after 5 December, having been involved in the question of regulation I will continue to monitor the events and hope to offer my services where requested.

Finally, I would like to thank Carmen Joanne Ablack, chair Standards Board, and Kathi Murphy, PLG representative, for the incredible work they have done around negotiations with the HPC which helped formulate the PLG document that goes before the Council on Thursday. It was both the formal and informal communications they held that made such a difference to the way the regulation is being moved forward.

Best wishes
James Antrican
Chair, UKCP
