Organisational History

The Northern Guild for Psychotherapy (NGP) was founded in 1983 by Jennie McNamara and Christine Lister-Ford at the Stockton site, under the name of Stockton Centre for Psychotherapy. It changed to its current name in 1999.The Northern Guild for Psychotherapy (NGP) is a member of the Humanistic and Integrative Section of UKCP and provides training in humanistic, relationship-based integrative psychotherapy. The core belief of our training philosophy is that a facilitating environment which values trust, confidentiality and safety, while respecting individual learning styles, is one in which those who are personally motivated have the ability to learn, grow and change. Theory, practice and professional development combined with student's inner learning through their personal development form the fundamental elements of training. Our commitment is to maintain the dignity and autonomy of each person, with an emphasis on personal responsibility, and our ethos is one of support and appropriate challenge in which each person is valued. Students are encouraged to develop an ethical belief in, and commitment to, continuing growth, creativity, and development as practising psychotherapists. They will have a sense of liveliness and curiosity about their clinical work, and be critically reflective about the theoretical, philosophical and historical underpinnings of psychotherapy. Our philosophy is in agreement with UKCP HIPS training standards (April 2000) in affirming the following common values -The centrality of social relationships in setting the framework in which individuals shape their lives, including the importance of political awareness and an understanding of the individual's experience, personal beliefs and values as well as a spiritual dimension to an individual's life and problems.

Theoretical orientation

Modular Structure - NGP offers the Diploma in Psychotherapy which leads to UKCP registration. Students may additionally opt to pursue the MSc pathway which leads to the MSc in Integrative Psychotherapy. The training is modular so that students can create a training plan to fit with their individual learning needs, with reference to their previous educational and professional backgrounds. Students may modify and update their training plan and, therefore, their route to accreditation, as new learning needs emerge. Students consult with their supervisor in creating their training plan. There are five course elements:
I) Conceptual Elements
II) Marked Elements
III) Supervised Practice Elements
IV) Professional Development Elements
V) Personal Elements The core modules take place over 10 weekends per year Year 1 Transactional Analysis Theory and Methodology.
Provides a grounding in Transactional Analysis, child development theory, integrated with skills development and professional issues. Year 2 The Therapeutic Relationship - Developing The Model
