HUMANISTIC & INTEGRATIVE PSYCHOTHERAPY SECTIONMetanoia Institute MET 13 North Common Road, Ealing, London W5 2QB Organisational History Founded in the early 1980's, Metanoia Institute was among the first in this country to offer humanistically oriented professional counselling and psychotherapy training programmes. We are based at a large, Victorian house in West London, facing onto Ealing Common. Our premises have been renovated during the past eighteen months providing high standards of comfort and equipment for students and staff. Central, District and Piccadilly line tube services and a direct rail service to Paddington are within 10 minutes' walk as are a wide variety of shops, cafes and restaurants. Metanoia Institute is a registered charity, and is non-profit making. Like many charities, Metanoia is also incorporated as a company limited by guarantee. All programmes are funded entirely from student fees. With over 1000 active members, Metanoia is among the larger psychotherapy and counselling educational institutions in the United Kingdom. Training Course Selection & Admission Psychotherapy training applicants normally require a degree in psychology, or a related discipline or an equivalent qualification/experience in one of the helping professions. We take into account other routes to eligibility such as prior short trainings, non-relevant degrees combined with work or life experiences, or a counselling qualification. Two assessors assess each applicant, who must attend a selection. The formal assessment interview involves an individual and/or a group assessment. This is followed by consultation amongst the assessors. Applicants must attend a two-day introductory workshop and demonstrate that they possess a basic knowledge of clinical skills, that they have engaged in self-awareness and personal development, and/or have had some experience of psychotherapy before starting training. Applicants to the MSc in Integrative Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy must have a degree in psychology plus the Graduate Basis for Registration (GBR) as specified by the British Psychological Society (BPS). Training Course Requirements Personal therapy Personal psychotherapy is required for the duration of training (at least 40 sessions per year) and the therapy needs to be of an orientation consistent with the theoretical and methodological approach of the student's training programme. Clinical/clients 500 hours for psychotherapy courses, 200 hours for counselling courses. We do not stipulate a maximum number of clients as many students are already employed as counsellors/therapists. We advise beginners to start with two clients and then gradually build up from there with the support of their supervisors. Supervision We require an average minimum of one hour of supervision to six hours of client contact time, but ask that this be more frequent at the start of practice. Students attend supervision every two weeks. Written work Full details of written work are available from Administration and include essays, tape transcripts/commentaries and supervised practice reports. A case study is required prior to. Research project are required for Integrative Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy Contemporary Person Centred Psychotherapy programmes. attendance (and interruptions) Attendance is required at all modules. If absence is unavoidable, missed work is made up and verified. Training Course Assessments, standards, role of training committee All courses have a range of formative and summative assessments. All written work is double marked and moderated by the external examiner and course moderator. Standards and grading criteria are drawn up by the programme leaders in conjunction with the Academic Committee, BPSC UKCP, BACP, HIPs, training standards and Middlesex University as appropriate. The Academic Committee comprises heads of department and course leaders, the Manager of the Clinical Services department and the Chief Executiv.
Theoretical orientation Metanoia offers humanistic and integrative training in psychotherapy, counselling psychology and counselling at Diploma, BA and Masters levels. All psychotherapy courses are offered part time, one weekend per month for ten modules for four academic years Plus the 'dissertation module' which leads to qualification. We offer four psychotherapy courses: Person Centred; Gestalt; Transactional Analysis and Integrative (with or without Integrative Counselling Psychology). All courses follow the training design described above and also have the same or very similar requirements for personal therapy, clinical practice, supervision, reading and written work. While the theoretical approaches differ, the courses are united in their commitment to training of relational practitioners - that is therapists who are aware of the importance of the relationship between client and practitioner, not only in establishing a vital working alliance (see psychotherapy outcome research findings e.g. Asay and Lambert 1999; Wampold 2001) but in providing a potent vehicle for growth and change. The Integrative Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy course is now offered both at Masters and Doctoral levels. Both are part time over 5 years. The programme offers a similar training philosophy and style to many of our other programmes. It generally runs from Friday to Sunday of each month over 10 months. Accreditation, graduation, membership Graduation from psychotherapy courses coincides with accreditation as UKCP registrants. This is achieved by completing the taught years with their attendant requirements, followed by a 'dissertation/case study module' during which the student completes the requirement of practice hours under supervision and consolidates his/her personal style. The written case study/dissertation must be passed prior the viva examination, evaluated by three/four suitably qualified practitioners and trainers). The MSc in Integrative Counselling Psychology follows a similar pattern with the requirements of a case study, research project and viva examination. Graduates attain Chartered Counselling Psychologist status with the BPS in addition to UKCP Registration.
