I want to make a complaint about my UKCP registered psychotherapist |
|
To make a complaint about a UKCP registered psychotherapist, the first step you will need to take is to write to the psychotherapists' member organisation.
If you do not know which member organisation your psychotherapist is registered with, you can contact us at UKCP. We will be able to tell you the name and address of the member organisation to write to.
You may be offered mediation to help resolve your complaint. The aim of mediation will be to find solutions to the issues you have raised and provide you with an explanation of events. If, after mediation, you are still not happy with the outcome, you must go through the member organisations' complaints procedures before you can appeal to the UKCP. |
I am not sure if my psychotherapist is UKCP registered |
| You can telephone us to find out if your psychotherapist is UKCP registered. Please note our register only lists psychotherapists, and does not include psychologists and counsellors. Not all psychotherapists will be registered with us.
If your therapist is not UKCP registered we may be able to suggest other organisations you can contact, but we will not be able to help you make your complaint. |
I would like some independent advice about making a complaint |
| There are several Organisations that can give you advice and help you make your complaint.

NHS Psychotherapy Services For complaints about a psychotherapy service offered in the NHS, you may get help and advice from your local NHS Trust.
Citizens Advice Bureau The National Association of Citizens Advice Bureau gives advice and information about your rights and where to find your local Citizens Advice Bureau. |
I'm not happy with the member organisation's response to my concerns |
| You may appeal to the UKCP if you are not happy with the member organisations' response to you.
It is important you request an appeal quickly. Our procedure only allows for appeals to be made within 28 days of the date of the formal response from the member organisation.
In addition, the UKCP can only accept an appeal on certain grounds. When you request an appeal, we will send you the Central Final Appeals Procedure that gives more details about this. |
I am a psychotherapy trainee and I would like to complain about a training issue |
| In the first instance, you must complain to the member organisation you are training with. They must hear your complaint through their written complaints procedure. In certain instances, they may ask you to complain to the university.
If you are not sure who to complain to, discuss the issue with your member organisation first. You may also ask advice from the appropriate Section of the UKCP. If you are not sure who this is, we will be able to tell you. However, we will not be able to help you make your complaint. You may be offered mediation to help resolve your complaint. The aim of mediation will be to find solutions to the issues you have raised and provide you with an explanation of events. If, after mediation, you are still not happy with the outcome, you must go through the member organisation's complaints procedure before you appeal to Section.
If you are not happy with the response you have received, under certain circumstances you may then appeal to the appropriate Section. When Section has heard your appeal, if you are still not happy with the result, you may in certain circumstances, appeal to the UKCP. In this case, you must write to the Chair of the Training Standards Committee at the address below, within 28 days of the date of the Section's formal response to you. |
I am a psychotherapist and I want to complain about a registration issue |
| In the first instance, you must complain to the member organisation you are, or were, registered with. Your complaint will be dealt with through the member organisation's written complaints procedures.
If you are unhappy with the outcome of your complaint, or you wish to raise a generic registration issue, you may write to the Chair of the Registration Board, care of the UKCP Office |
I have an enquiry about an ethical issue relating to psychotherapy |
| You may write to UKCP's Chair of the Ethics Committee care of the UKCP Office. We are sorry but we are unable to answer ethical enquiries over the phone. |
I am a psychotherapist and I need legal advice |
| UKCP is unable to recommend any particular firm of solicitors or legal advisors.
If you are in need of legal advice we recommend you contact your local Citizen's Advice Bureau, who can provide information on relevant legal services. |
