Organisational History

The organisation was founded in 1986 by a group of therapists trained by Dr Arthur Janov at the 'L'Institut Primal Europeen' in Paris. The aim of the London Association of Primal Psychotherapists has been to develop a clinical model that allowed for the possibility of catharsis if necessary, but which explored the complexities of the client's story within a safe therapeutic setting. We started running a training programme in 1988, and in 1995 we became a member of the UKCP. Our clinical work is at the core of the organsiation and we have dveloped a range of specialist skills to facilitate our work. In the last twenty years, we have seen the understanding of trauma increase enormously across the whole spectrum of psychotherapy. In 2005, we decided that we would become a listing member of the UKCP and training would continue through supervision and seminars both in the UK and Europe.

Theoretical orientation

The organisation's work builds on the theoretical perspectives of John Bowlby's attachment theory and the wotk of Arthur Janov and Alice Miller. They illustarte powerfully the importance of good attachments; they show how children can be traumatised both in families and in institutions such as hospitals and schools. The suffering caused by lack of love, care, touch or atrention, or by physical or sexual abuse, can rarely be communicated or expressed by the child. Without anyone to recognise their pain, a child will too often blame him or herself. The consequences of this can be far reaching, ranging form mild discontent, anxiety, depression, problems in relationships through to crippling disability and unhappiness. In our experience, painful childhood traumas and disturbed family relationships must be worked through with one consistent therpaist. Within the therapeutic relationship, the consequences of early painful relationships and experiences can emerge. We work from a relational/intersubjective perspective, providing an environment in which emotions can be recognised, felt and worked through. We have developed a range of specialist skills to faciltate our work. Additional trainings taken by our members include: a psychoanalytic/psychodynamic perspective, working with e dying and bereaved, working with intercultural issues, working with disability, as well as expereince of using eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is a well-researched technique that has been shown to be effective in treating post-traumatic stress symptoms. Since many of our clients have a history of trauma this technique fits in well with our clincal and theoretical approach.
