Joint statement from Tricia Scott and Andrew Samuels

The recent UKCP election featured a welter of allegations and counter-allegations. In particular, it will have been apparent to everyone that we (Tricia and Andrew) were particularly at odds. We want to issue a joint statement about this difficult situation that is both authentic and able to help us all to move on.

Tricia feels that Andrew over-reacted to her approach to the International Association for Analytical Psychology for a reference on him during the election and, as a result, damaged her more than she damaged him. However, she accepts that it would have been better if she had informed Andrew in advance about seeking a reference rather than approaching a colleague of his without his knowledge.

Andrew still feels aggrieved at HIPS' Political Group's decision to seek a reference from IAAP. He considers this inappropriate conduct. However, he accepts that his use of legally tinged language with regard to Tricia herself as opposed to HIPS' Political Group was a mistake. Hence any suggestion that what Tricia personally did was unauthorised, improper or illegal is withdrawn.

We have not managed to reach agreement on one point, which is whether or not the conduct of the HIPS' Political Group was improper.

Both of us realise that what happened was damaging and destructive. We wish it had been otherwise. We apologise to each other for the hurt caused.

Tricia Scott and Andrew Samuels
