Organisational History

TA is a theory of personality and social psychology within a humanistic tradition, pioneered by Eric Berne in the USA in the 1950's. It offers a framework for understanding personality, communication, the "games people play" and personal life "scripts". It has applications in psychotherapy, counselling, education and organisations.
The ITA has now been in existence for 20 years. The institute has links worldwide with the International Transactional Analysis Association (ITAA) and the European Association (EATA).
Among its functions the institute organises annual conferences, regular newsletters, monitors training standards and professional practice and deals with ethical complaints.

Training Course Selection & Admission

Training to become a Certified Transactional Analyst (CTA) or Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst (TSTA) is usually an additional training in connection with a profession. A relevant degree or equivalent may also fulfil the criteria. The introductory course in TA (the 101) covers in a minimum of 12 hours an internationally agreed syllabus forming the basis of TA.

Training Course Requirements

Own therapy
Trainees are required to be in therapy throughout their training, of the type and intensity that they intend to practise.
Clients
Trainees should have had at least 1,500 hours overall clinical experience before entering for the exam.
Theoretical studies
A minimum of 600 hours training in theory is required. This will be primarily TA theory but will include other models.
Overall a trainee is required to have a minimum of 150 supervision hours. Ongoing training and supervision in the use of TA includes peer group work within the training group, case presentation, diagnosis and treatment planning and audio or video tape critique.
Certification in TA follows successful completion of a written case study and an oral exam at which the candidate presents audiotapes of clinical work.
