Organisational History

The Institute of Group Analysis was founded in 1971 to provide clinical training in analytic group psychotherapy. The Institute currently offers three qualifying courses leading to membership; these take place in Glasgow, London, and Manchester. Each course offers the opportunity to undertake an MSc. The London course meets twice weekly on a termly basis while the Glasgow and Manchester courses meet over ten block weekends per year. In addition to the Qualifying Courses, the Institute offers a broad range of short courses, seminars, supervision, workshops and experiential groups throughout the country. There are currently approximately 300 members practising group analytic psychotherapy in the Health Service and in private practice. Group analysis is also widely used working with teams of professionals in both the public and private sectors. The IGA offers a clinical service for patients seeking group and individual psychotherapy and we also have an Organisational Consultancy Section.

Training Course Selection & Admission

Medical and non-medical candidates with a University degree or equivalent professional qualification and experience. Preliminary require¬ment to have attended an Introductory Course in group analysis (thirty half-day sessions) accredited by the Institute, and usually to have had at least one year's exper¬ience of group analytic psychotherapy prior to commencement of course. Candidates with insufficient experience of working with psychiatric patients prior to commencement will be expected to fulfil these requirements preferably before or, with prior arrangement, during the course.

Training Course Requirements

Personal therapy a. London: minimum 4 ½ years of three hours' group analytic psychotherapy per week.
b. Manchester and Glasgow: minimum three years group analytic therapy over twenty-eight 'block' weekends, involving nine hours small group psychotherapy and two hours in large group.

Clinical/clients Conduct two suitable patient groups, one for one and a half hours each week, for two years minimum, under supervision and the other a brief group of one year's duration.

Supervision Students conduct two groups under supervision; a once-weekly clinical group for adults that runs for a minimum of six full terms. The second group is of shorter duration and may accommodate students' special areas of interest.

Written work There are assessments of written work each year of the training. A theoretical dissertation of 5,000 words is required at the end of the first year. Students taking the MSc in London must submit a dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words in September of the third year.

Attendance Trainees are expected to attend all elements of the training. Course Administrators should be informed of any absence. Longer absences due to sickness should be supported by a medical certificate. The course convenor will advise how interruptions will be managed.

Training Course Assessments, standards, role of training committee

The criteria and procedures for assessment and qualification in both the MSc and Clinical training in Group Analysis are clearly stated in the Course Training Handbooks, which are updated annually. The appropriate Course Qualifying Committee is responsible for monitoring Trainee's development and as such takes reports twice a year on student year groups from Supervisors and Teachers. Qualification is at the discretion of the Council of the Institute, which receives recommendations from the appropriate Course Committee. Qualification is dependent upon satisfactory performance in and integration of the different elements of the training, i.e. personal therapy, supervised practice, other course activities including large groups, course appraisals, workshops, theoretical work and dissertations. All students must submit a Clinical Paper of around 10,000 words to the Panel of Readers for approval, which must be accepted before the student can be recommended to Council for membership of the Institute.

 Theoretical orientation

Group Analysis is an established form of group therapy based on the experience that deep and lasting change can occur within a carefully constituted group whose combined membership is reflective of wider society. Exploration of the interactions between patients and therapist are understood within an evolving framework using psychoanalytic, sociological, developmental and social psychological theory with the aim of reaching underlying, or unconscious, sources of distress. Psychoanalytic theory is central to the development of Group analytic theory and this is reflected in the courses.

Accreditation, graduation, membership

Qualification is at the discretion of the Council of the Institute which receives recommendations from the relevant course through the Training and Academic Policy Committee. There is a graduation ceremony to honour new members though Membership may begin before this point. Graduation entitles members to use of the title Member of the Institute of Group Analysis (MInstGA) and to registration with the UKCP.

Code of ethics/ethical principals

The Code of Ethics and The Code of Practice for Training Organisations and Trainees are to be found in the respective Training Handbooks. These clearly set out the mechanisms for making and dealing with trainee's complaints and grievances. The Appeals process is also clearly set out. Copies of both documents are available from the main office on request. All trainees are sent information about how to insure themselves if they are not already in that position.
