Time Commitment - Tuesdays plus a few weekend days | Theoretical orientation
The theoretical orientation is Integrative, where relational, psychodynamic and neuroscientific models are key. As the outcome studies have shown, it is the relationship that heals, not adherence to method. Our primary concern therefore is one of treatment. This treatment is informed by Bowlby's work on unmet attachment needs and borrows extensively from the work of Fairbairn, Balint, Winnicott and Kohut who also assert the primacy of relational needs. This is backed by empirical neuroscientific research which shows that the attachment system is genetically ingrained in the subcortical area of the human brain, and when disrupted can trigger intense states of rage, fear or separation distress, inhibiting the capacity for learning, play and concern for others. Whilst use is made of this fundamental disagreement with Freud's basic concept of human nature, his writings on psychopathology, repression, defence and transference form an important part of the curriculum. In addition, considerable emphasis is given to the latest theories of psychological health, the science of well - being and the fulfilment of human potential. Integral to this is the importance of the active use of the creative imagination (Jung, Hillman, Maslow, Moore, McNiff). All courses address the need to foster natural human creativity and focus on 'the creative capacities of human beings to understand themselves and others, and to solve their own problems' (Association of Humanistic Psychology). In relation to this, all courses adhere to the belief that communication through metaphor, image and art media can contribute significantly to the personal , emotional and social development of the individual.
