A brief history of UKCP
The Foster Report published by H.M.S.O concluded that there should be legislation to control psychotherapy in the UK. The Professions' Joint Working Party on Statutory Registration of Psychotherapists was set up with Paul Sieghart as Chair. The Sieghart report. Recommendations were for indicative registration and for a Psychotherapy Council to be established. Graham Bright, MP, introduced a Bill to the House of Commons to regulate the practice and profession of psychotherapy and related disciplines in the UK. It fell at the second reading. The British Association for Counselling organised a symposium at Rugby to discuss further the issues raised by Foster and Sieghart reports. Annual meetings of the Rugby Psychotherapy Conference. Inauguration of the United Kingdom Standing Conference for Psychotherapy, attended by 120 delegates from 66 organisations. The delegates voted to form a voluntary Register of Psychotherapists. More meetings were held with Members of Parliament and the Department of Health. First moves were made towards forming a European Psychotherapy Association. It was decided to form a post-graduate level profession with specific entry and training criteria. It became necessary to develop from being a Conference to being a Council. Thus the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy was inaugurated in January and the National Register UKCP began to work with the Department of Employment's Lead Body for Advice, Guidance, Counselling and Psychotherapy. UKCP cooperated with the Department of Health on a survey of registered psychotherapists regarding the provision of psychotherapy nationwide. First UKCP Professional Conference. The Third Edition of the National register is published in collaboration with Routledge Books. UKCP played a key part in the development of the European Certificate of Psychotherapy, ratified in this year by the General Assembly of the European Association of Psychotherapy.
