Organisational History

The Centre for Freudian Analysis and Research was founded in 1985 with the aim of promoting and developing psychoanalysis in the United Kingdom from within a Freudian and Lacanian perspective. The work of the Centre involves the study of psychoanalysis through teaching, seminars and study groups and it trains psychoanalysts within the context of its clinical training programme. CFAR runs its courses from rooms at Birkbeck College, Malet Street, London WC1

Training Course Selection & Admission

The Introductory programme is open to anyone interested. Admission to Psychoanalytic Studies or the full training programme requires a series of interviews. These will take into account clinical and/or academic experience. Candidates who do not have clinical experience generally tend to follow the Introductory Programme before moving onto the training programme. As well as encouraging budding clinicians, CFAR also welcomes those who have an interest in psychoanalysis but do not wish to practice.

Training Course Requirements

Personal therapy Trainees must be in analysis with a psychoanalyst recognised by CFAR for the duration of the training. This must involve a minimum frequency of 2 sessions per week.

Clinical/clients To qualify the candidate will have had to have worked with a minimum of 2 patients under regular weekly supervision for at least 18 months.

Supervision As above. Trainees are also required to work with more than one supervisor over the course of their training.

Written work Four papers are to be submitted, at least 2 of which must focus
on clinical material.

Attendance (and interruptions) Trainees are expected to attend all of CFAR's activities unless
they have good reason for missing some of the timetabled activities which is agreed with CFAR.
