The European Certificate of Psychotherapy

The UKCP is the UK's National Awarding Organisation for the European Certificate for Psychotherapy (ECP) established by the European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP) and awarded through the National Awarding Organisations in each respective country.

The EAP promotes high training standards for psychotherapy across Europe.  It represents 128 organisations from 41 European countries. Membership is also open to individual psychotherapists. More detailed information about the EAP is available on their website. www.europsyche.org

The ECP application process

You will need to complete an application form and submit this along with your C.V., two recent passport size photographs, and the fee of £200. Please note we expect that the fee for ECP applications to increase in 2006.

The EAP will expect your C.V. to clearly provide details of your training as a psychotherapist, and your post UKCP registration experience. If your C.V. does not include this information it could delay your application.

An application form and a C.V. checklist can be obtained from the UKCP, or downloaded from our website.

Please read the application guidance notes and C.V. check list carefully before completing the application. Please ensure that your C.V. and photographs are included with the form along with the application fee.

The general procedure is as follows:

The UKCP will check your application; it also needs to be checked by the Chair of your UKCP Member Organisation and the Chair of the UKCP Section that represents your method of psychotherapy. We then contact the representative of European Wide Accrediting Organisation (EWAO) of your method within the EAP as they have to confirm that your training is at the appropriate level for the EAP.

If the UKCP and EWAO accept your application the EAP Registrar does a final formal check on your application. Subject to this approval the EAP office in Vienna will issue your certificate (ECP) via the UKCP, and add your name to the EAP Register. Please note that applications can take on average 9-12 months to process.

If there is no EWAO for your method within the EAP to check your application it will be sent to the EAP's Grandparenting Accreditation Panel (GAP) to approve.
