Outcome of the debate Psychotherapy has done more harm than good

The outcome of last night's Intelligence Squared debate on the motion Psychotherapy has done more harm than good was decisively against the motion.

Many congratulations to the winning team of Andrew Samuels, Lord Layard and Lorna Martin. Their powerful performance increased their share of the vote on the evening by 38% while the vote for the motion increased by 22%.

Before the debate, 25% of the audience at the Royal Geographical Society were in favour of the motion, 46% against, and 29% undecided. After the debate 31% were in favour, and 64% were against the notion that psychotherapy has done more harm than good; 5% remained undecided.

The online vote was even more resoundingly against the motion, with 95% voting in favour of psychotherapy, 4% voting for the motion and 1% undecided.

Thank you to everyone who was able to vote. It demonstrates that the profession and UKCP can achieve results from political action.

We were fortunate to have David Pink as our new chief executive who has the knowledge and expertise to guide our response to an event like this at short notice. I would also like to thank UKCP staff for the quick turn around on this.

Although this may have been a relatively small event, the people involved are some of those who we need to ensure realise that the light of psychotherapy can be seen in a wide variety of places.

Best Wishes
