In the interests of sustainability and social justice, UKCP, alongside other responsible organisations in the third sector, recognises the importance of considering the environmental context in which it operates.
Workgoup 5 of the Diversity Equality and Social Responsibility Forum has prepared an Environmental, Sustainability and Climate Change policy, which the Board of UKCP has agreed can be put forward to members for consultation.
The policy includes:
- Special consideration of the particular insights members of the psychological professions have to offer
- Developing understanding of the best ways we can work with other professional groups on key issues in this area
- Placing our own house in order by consideration and amelioration of the environmental impact of our activities
- Undertaking a risk analysis of the likely impacts of various environment scenarios upon our capacity to operate.
A summary of the proposed action plan:
- Above all, UKCP will show leadership in its own sphere of influence in recognising the important role that the psychological professions have to play, and may need to play in the future, firstly above all else by promoting and supporting conversation and debate among members and within organisational members (OMs).
- UKCP will develop links with relevant organisations and committed individuals to share ideas and liaise with other organisations including governmental departments to place pressure on national government for appropriate action and policies.
- UKCP will organise an environmental audit of its own activities and prepares a plan to reduce its environmental impact.
- UKCP will respond to the inevitable risks posed by environmental changes including climate change by evaluating the risks posed to UKCP's ability to function and take steps accordingly.
- UKCP will support its members and OMs also in undertaking similar smaller scale steps to 1-4 above.
We invite you to have a look at the full policy below and to respond to the questions posed in the invitation to consultation letter, also below by Friday 24 February. We welcome responses from individuals, OMs and other UKCP groupings. Please send them to Niamh Dunne, DESR Administrator at
