Choosing a therapistThe key to successful therapy is finding the right therapist for you. However good a therapist is, it is the relationship between the two of you that determines whether you trust them enough, and they come to understand you enough, to help you explore and find solutions for your problem. Some therapists specialise in particular problems; you can identify this when using Find a therapist. Having found a therapist you can talk to them on the telephone, to see if they have appointments available at a time and place that suits you, if they feel they could help you with your problem, and if you feel happy to meet them. Don't be surprised if you get an answerphone when you ring: these are used because they don't want to be interrupted when meeting a client, but they will return your call. You can meet your first choice of therapist for a single session, to discuss what you are looking for from therapy and their training and experience, to help you decide whether they are the right therapist for you. Only you can decide, do not be afraid to ask questions or request further information before making your mind up. Before agreeing to see a particular therapist, ask yourself:
Having confidence in your therapist is essential. Many people do not find the right therapist at their first attempt. If this happens to you, it is not your fault. You have already decided you would benefit from therapy, so it is worth trying again. Useful Links |
