Organisational History

The Centre was established in 1984 to offer a holistic approach to psychotherapy and professional training that is Transpersonal based. An introductory one-year part-time course is available for those applicants who have little or no background in the field of therapy. A four-year part-time Diploma course is open to those who have some training and experience to the therapeutic field. An MA in Transpersonal Psychotherapy is offered as an alternative to the Diploma; an MA in Child, Adolescent & Family Therapy is also offered to Diploma course graduates and those with equivalent training; all three courses lead to UKCP registration. Finally, three separate advanced Diploma courses are available to graduates, in Supervisor training, Dream Work and Advanced Psychotherapy Training respectively. They can also be combined into a taught PhD programme.

Training Course Selection & Admission

Admission to the Diploma course requires completion of a one-year part-time counselling course prior to the diploma course. Alternatives, such as one year's previous experience in the counselling field, are also considered. All candidates must demonstrate sufficient maturity, life experience and the capability to pursue the course responsibly. Previous experience of individual therapy is recommended prior to the beginning of the Diploma course. Please contact the Centre or visit our website for full details of all other courses.

Theoretical orientation

A TRANSPERSONAL APPROACH TO COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY In transpersonal psychotherapy personal breakdowns and crises are seen to have a useful purpose in that they:

a) act as a warning signal, as well as

b) to indicate the way for us to change, grow and unfold. Once the crisis is over and the mental condition is stabilised there is a chance to re-examine ourselves with a view to change and unfoldment, thus preventing a recurrence of the crisis. This involves reassessing our motivation, sense of purpose and meaning in life and our capabilities. Much of the counselling and psychotherapeutic work done at the Centre is based on the fundamental principle of building and expanding on people's strengths or 'qualities'. Attention is also paid to balancing the person's energies and lifestyle, i.e. the balance between grounded and aspiring, the balance between being expressive and receptive, and to helping the person find their natural rhythm in work, home etc. At this point the client is able to sense the right direction and to set goals that give him or her a sense of fulfilment and achievement in life.
