Organisational History
The BAS is a Company Limited by Guarantee and a registered charity. It is the registration and supervisory body for Autogenic Therapy in the UK. It was founded in 1984 to provide training and maintenance of professional standards for autogenic psychotherapists and to encourage research into Autogenic Therapy and its applications.
Training Course Selection & Admission
Admission for membership This is by undergoing the BAS professional training course. Applicants must hold a primary qualification in a caring profession: medicine, psychology, nursing, psychotherapy or counselling, with experience of counselling skills relevant to their professional discipline. Where appropriate, specific voluntary work or life experience can be taken into account. Admission is by in-depth interview, supported by two professional references.
Training Course Requirements
Own therapy. Candidates must have completed a course in basic Autogenic Therapy for themselves, with ongoing practice for six months prior to acceptance on the Diploma Course. Thereafter they are assigned a personal tutorial supervisor. Continuing personal practice of autogenic methods is essential.
Clients A very wide range of clients can benefit from this therapy. Emotional wellbeing can be disturbed by a number of life factors, causing psychosomatic symptoms which do not respond to other interventions. Clients may be GP recommended or self-referred in many settings. The BAS is the resource for finding a therapist in the UK.
