Organisational History

BCPC, founded in 1984, provides two nationally recognised Diploma Courses: a Diploma in Counselling (accredited by BACP) and a Diploma in Psychotherapy leading to admission to the UKCP register. The Psychotherapy Diploma is taught concurently with the MA in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy, validated by Middlesex University. The Training is based on a humanistic and integrative approach. The trainings for these courses are all part time, with application deadlines each May for intake in September. Students must be in approved psychotherapy throughout the training. BCPC also provides a programme of Continuing Professional Development seminars, workshops and longer courses, open to students and graduates of other training organisations as well as its own members. For details, please see the website. Members of BCPC can benefit from referrals from our Referral Service and listing on our website, as well as regular newsletters and the annual conference. Other BCPC projects include a grant-funded project providing free counselling and psychotherapy to refugees and asylum seekers.

Training Course Selection & Admission

External students are admitted to Foundation or, if appropriate, to the Counselling and Psychotherapy Diplomas via Access Courses. Application deadline for September 2008 intake is 19th May 2008. Two references are required for every application. Applicants are shortlisted for interview on the basis of their applications. Previous study and APL requirements exist for those applying to courses other than Foundation. Places are offered on the basis of interviews, generally held in June.

Training Course Requirements

Personal therapy Students must be in personal therapy at least once a week with a psychotherapist approved by BCPC for the duration of their study.

Clinical/clients Clients are seen under supervision from the second year of training, in a placement setting. Private clients are seen from the third year of training onwards.

Supervision Group supervision is undertaken as part of the training and has the function of training supervision. This is distinct from individual supervision, whose function is to support the student with their particular case load.

Written work Various essays, journals, self-assessments and other written work are required at each stage throughout the training.

Attendance Students are expected to be present for all course days. When absence is unavoidable, students must ensure that gaps in their learning are addressed to the satisfaction of the course tutor. Insufficient attendance may prejudice continuation to a further stage.

Training Course Assessments, standards, role of training committee

Continuous self and peer assessment is monitored by tutors who have a pastoral role in the training process. The overall assessment involves:

  • marking of written work
  • feedback from trainers and supervisors
  • self and peer assessment.

To qualify students need to have completed an in-depth Case Study, a Dissertation, and stipulated hours of clinical work with clients.  The Case study and Dissertation are internally and externally examined and the final assessment decision is made by the Examination Board.

Theoretical orientation

Our training is Humanistic and Integrative in approach. Humanistic theory informs our core values, and is based on the conviction that people are naturally healthy if given the right conditions. It emphasises the value of authentic experience and a real relationship between client and counsellor or psychotherapist. Psychoanalytic perspectives emphasise the ways in which childhood experience shapes each individual.

Our integrative training incorporates both backgrounds to ensure a holistic understanding of the therapeutic process.

Our courses are all part-time, and include a dynamic mix of experiential learning, group discussion and work with clients. We encourage an open and enquiring attitude in students.

Training offers an opportunity for personal growth and this is enhanced by being in therapy whilst in training.

Accreditation, graduation, membership

Students successful in their final assessment are accredited, and become full graduate members of BCPC and BCPCA, our professional association. Members are then subject to re-accreditation every five years.

The functions of BCPC and BCPCA are regulated by a number of committees made up chiefly of members. These include the board of Trustees of the training Charity, the Standards and Ethics Committee, the Training Committee and the Re-accreditation Committee.

Graduate members have full voting rights at the BCPC and BCPCA annual general meetings.

Code of ethics/ethical principals

All BCPC members must adhere to our Statement of Ethical Principles, which represent the values and philosophy underpinning the codes of practice and training policies of BCPC. Members must also adhere to the our Codes of Practice, Equal Opportunities Statement, and Complaints and Grievances Procedures. For full details, please contact the office.
