Organisational History
Background information AHPP has been established since 1980, as an accrediting organisation which exists to promote the highest standards of professional practice. AHPP became incorporated as the United Kingdom Association for Humanistic Psychology Practitioners in 2000. The principal aims are: to maintain accreditation criteria and procedures to ensure a consistent and professional standard of practitioners, maintain a professional register, operate a complaints procedure and promulgate ethical codes of practice; to undertake or sponsor research and promulgate the useful results thereof; to work with other bodies having similar aims to encourage the provision and development of appropriate support and educational services; and to promote humanistic psychology through events. The UKAHPP does not run training courses. As well as Full membership which accredits psychotherapist members onto the UKCP national register and counsellor members onto the UK Register of Counsellors, there is also Associate membership for trainees and practitioners working towards Full membership, and Affiliate membership for psychotherapists accredited already by other UKCP organisations.
Training Course Selection & Admission
Admission Full (accredited) members must satisfy strict requirements regarding training, supervision, own therapy and practice, via self and peer-assessment involving application forms, case study, supervisors reports, and interview by UKAHPP's Membership Committee. Full membership as a psychotherapist is given to those who have completed a broadly-ranging training of at least three or four years duration; this may consist of several different courses, provide that in total they meet required number of tutor-contact hours and cover the required training content. Training should include an understanding of psychodynamics, transference, counter transference, and psychopathology, or applicants should be able to show that they have acquired equivalent theoretical understanding and experiential component by some other means. Applicants must also have had regular supervision of client casework for not less than two years, with an experienced supervisor (not their own psychotherapist), and after completion of training must have maintained for at least 2 years a client caseload of at least 6 clients seen for varying durations. Members are also expected to have a commitment to continuing personal and professional development and to be involved in ongoing supervision. Full members must apply for renewal of accreditation every five years.
