ANALYTICAL PSYCHOLOGY - PSYCHOANALYTIC & PSYCHODYNAMIC SECTIONAssociation for Group and Individual Psychotherapy AGIP Organisational History The Association was founded in 1974 as part of Lady Balogh's Psychotherapy Trust for Education in Psychotherapy. We became independent of the Trust in 1999, becoming a Company Limited by Guarantee and, in 2000, a Registered Charity. We are a founder member organisation of the Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Section of the UKCP. The Fairbridge Clinic, opened in 1994, operates from AGIP and offers reasonable cost therapy to the public and low- cost therapy for suitable patients who agree to be seen for a minimum of two years by a trainee psychotherapist. The Fairbridge Clinic aims to offer training patients to trainees who see their patients at the Clinic in AGIP premises. Training Course Selection & Admission
Applicants are selected on the basis of a written application, letters of reference, and two individual interviews. There may be a group interview. Training Course Requirements Personal therapy Throughout the training, trainees must be in psychoanalytic therapy with an approved psychotherapist for a minimum of twice-weekly but with a substantial period at a greater frequency. Clinical/clients Two training patients are required for qualification. They are seen twice a week for a minimum of two years and eighteen months respectively. It is expected that additional patients will form part of a case load at qualification. Supervision Trainees are required to have one training supervisor for their first training patient and to be in a small supervision group (with a second supervisor) for their second training patient. Any additional patients also have to be adequately supervised. Supervision for training patients is weekly.
Attendance Regular attendance at, and satisfactory completion of, the four-year course. Training Course Assessments, standards, role of training committee The responsibility for the training course is delegated by AGIP Council to the Training Committee. The Training Committee oversees each trainee's progress from application and interviews to the completion of the four year course and clinical requirements and final application for professional membership. The Training Committee approves each trainee's therapist and supervisors and ensures that they have an appropriate level of experience and psychoanalytic training. There are regular external and internal assessments regarding the standards of essays and the final paper. Trainees are required to fill in yearly feedback assessments to ensure the continuing quality of the seminars and the course as a whole.
The course is based on classical and contemporary psychoanalytic and analytical psychology theory. The foundations are laid in the first year, where the first year entrants focus on the theories of Freud, Jung and Klein. A two year long infant observation seminar initiates the clinical training. From year two, trainees regularly join with the rest of training body in a series of seminars which, taken as a whole, open up three key areas: object relations' theorists, contemporary psychoanalytic theory (including attachment theory and neuroscience) and the initial preparation for clinical practice. By the fourth year of training, trainees are offered a series of seminars on synthesis, in order to encourage the process of making a personal synthesis from all the academic and clinical work covered. Preparation for writing the final paper is supported by special seminars. Throughout the course there is a focus on comparative psychoanalytic models connected to clinical work. This encourages and builds an understanding of synthesis of theory and practice. The training is based on the importance of recognising differences and being able to critically contrast and compare as a challenging way of understanding psychoanalytic concepts. The experiential group - which trainees attend weekly during term time - and the all-day teaching groups are important components of our four year training, both for personal development and for enabling a greater understanding of psychodynamic processes. We embody this emphasis by including 'Group' in our organisations title. The curriculum is revised and updated every year. Please contact AGIP or go to our web page for a current curriculum. Accreditation, graduation, membership Eight years is allowed for the completion of all training requirements.
A minimum of six months part time psychiatric experience If the application is in order and is accepted by the Training Committee, it is passed onto full Council for final ratification. Code of ethics/ethical principals
