A conference to consider the bigger question UKCP is making huge strides with its diversity, equalities and social responsibility agenda and this conference exemplifies the trend. We think that the contribution of psychotherapy to debates and issues in the public sphere is arguably a far bigger question with more at stake than even the matter of regulation which exercises us all so passionately.
The 21st century has brought with it new challenges for society and for our profession. In a world of increasing stress and crisis, psychotherapeutic work with the marginalised and the unwanted can take us beyond the traditional scope of our clinical practice. Collectively and individually, we need to respond to current societal issues and social phenomena, develop psychotherapeutic perspectives to global change, and improve access to psychological support for all sections of society.
Providing psychotherapy in transient spaces, with psychosocial tensions, or with marginalization and disability inevitably touches on deeper issues of power, authority, identity, individuality and conformity.
Psychotherapy, policy making and research The conference also offers you an opportunity to think about and debate the compatibilities and tensions between the psychotherapy field and policy makers' current thinking about wellbeing in public services. On the final day, a panel of researchers will explore how research can improve the lives and the effectiveness of practitioners and develop ideas of what practitioners should be demanding from research.
An interactive event At the conference, you will meet speakers, panellists and facilitators from all modalities who contribute clinical skills and resources to meet these challenges and share their theoretical, ethical or philosophical considerations. But this is an interactive event and you will have many opportunities to explore and discuss such clinical challenges with presenters and facilitators, from working with the social unconscious to military service trauma, internet phenomena and climate change. There will also be two assemblies scheduled during the conference where the state of UKCP and the full range professional political issues can be discussed.
Keynote speakers The list of keynote speakers and the topics that we've mentioned show both the range and the quality of what is on offer: Valerie Sinason, Camila Batmanghelidjh, Dieter Nitzgen, Sue Gerhardt, Mary-Jayne Rust, George Marshall, Aaron Balick, Renos Papadopoulos, Richard Evans, Carmen Joanne Ablack, Merete Holm Brantbjerg.
We look forward to seeing you there. David and Andrew
